Supporting Girls with Reactive Attachment Disorder
Trailhead Girls Academy's Approach to RAD
At Trailhead Girls Academy, we are a residential private school designed specifically for girls diagnosed with Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD). We understand that families who come to us are often exhausted, heartbroken, and searching for answers. Loving a child with RAD can be incredibly complex. By the time parents are seeking out-of-home placements, most have tried everything they know to do, and are still watching their daughter struggle.
Our program was created with these families in mind.
We provide a safe, structured, and deeply intentional environment where girls with RAD can step out of the patterns that have kept them stuck, and begin building the skills they need for a more stable, independent future.
A Structured Environment That Calms the RAD Brain
Many students with RAD live in a constant state of fight, flight, or freeze—often triggered within the home environment, even, and especially when, that home is loving and supportive. This isn't a reflection of parenting—it's the reality of how RAD affects the brain.
At Trailhead, we remove the emotional pressure that often fuels that cycle. Our staff are trained not to force connection or attachment, but instead to create a calm, predictable environment with clear expectations. Students are given the space to settle, feel safe, and focus on something they often deeply want: independence, control over their own success, and a path forward.
We create a neutral, expectation-based environment where students are consistently supported in meeting clear, achievable goals. This removes relational stress and allows students to focus on education, gaining independence, confidence, and self-sufficiency.
Motivation Through Structure and Independence
Students at Trailhead work toward tangible outcomes (goods and services) through a clear system of expectations. Our days are built around clarity and consistency. Each student follows a checklist that outlines exactly what is expected and what they can earn through their efforts.
For example, students are expected to complete four hours of focused academic work each day. Once that is finished, their school day is complete. They are then free to move into activities, social time, and other opportunities they've earned.
This approach removes emotional struggles with adults and replaces them with something their RAD brain is always seeking: choice and control. We remove as many systems for students to "fight against" as we give them choices throughout the day with their time management, which expectations they will complete first, etc. This allows them to feel in control, but also connects expectations to the goods and services they want. We have found this allows students to be motivated on their own to complete daily expectations. Students are not working to please staff, they are working to reach their own goals.
Weekly outings, off-campus privileges, and even employment opportunities are all earned through consistent follow-through. Over time, students begin to see a direct connection between their effort and their success.
A Unified Parent–Staff Partnership
You are not alone here—and you are not the "bad guy."
One of the most challenging dynamics of RAD is how it can divide the adults who care about a child. At Trailhead, we work hard to remove that burden from families. Because students with RAD often rely on manipulation to navigate relationships with adults, we focus tirelessly on operating as a unified team. Communication is open, consistent, and collaborative. Decisions are made together, so students experience clear, steady boundaries without mixed messages.
Requests are not answered individually by staff, but rather as a unified "team" made up of parents and program leadership. This consistency removes opportunities for division and creates a stable, predictable environment for the student. This also allows parents to not be the "bad guys" while also removing our staff as "new manipulation opportunities." Students are often told:
"That's a really interesting idea, we will discuss that as a team and get back to you."
Redefining What Progress Looks Like
We understand that traditional expectations around relationships don't always apply to children with RAD.
Rather than focusing on emotional closeness, we help families accept the reality of what success really looks like for their child with RAD. Because of this, we focus on what we believe will help students succeed long-term:
Progress may look different here—and that's okay. Our goal is to help each student build the tools she needs to navigate life more successfully.
Individualized Family-Centered Care
By the time families seek out-of-home placement, the entire family system has often been affected. Parents are worn down. Siblings have been impacted. Everyone needs space to heal.
We honor that.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach at Trailhead. Most families need time and distance, while still wanting to make sure their RAD child does not feel abandoned. We honor these differences by allowing parents to guide decisions regarding contact, visits, and length of stay. Whether a student is with us for several weeks or several years, services are tailored to meet each family's unique needs—without judgment.
We meet you where you are to accommodate either a shorter respite option or a long-term solution.
Accessible and Flexible Therapeutic Support
Trailhead Girls Academy is intentionally structured as an outpatient therapeutic model. Research and experience show that traditional individual therapy is often less effective for students with RAD.
By remaining outpatient, families have the flexibility to work with therapists who specialize in RAD and who best fit their needs. Therapy services are coordinated privately through each family's insurance, allowing for more personalized care while keeping tuition significantly lower than full therapeutic placements.
Preparing for Real Life
We know that many families reach a point where their greatest hope is simple:
"Help my child be okay in the world."
That's our focus.
We are not here to promise a cure. We are here to create progress that matters. We want families and siblings to heal, we want your RAD child to understand what success looks like. We ultimately want to prepare our RAD students for successful adulthood by focusing on the following:
A Realistic, Compassionate Approach
We understand the realities of Reactive Attachment Disorder and the toll it takes on families. It is hard—on children, on siblings, and on the parents who love them.
At Trailhead Girls Academy, we offer a place where things can begin to feel possible again. A place where your daughter can calm her mind, learn essential skills, and take meaningful steps toward her future.
And a place where you, as parents, are understood, supported, and never judged.
